The Readers' Quest is a way that we can share our common love of books and reading while raising funds and awareness to support Indigenous literacy.  The Readers' Quest is open to everyone in your school community; children, teachers and parents (and is perfect for your staff bookclub).

The Readers' Quest partnered with Indigenous Literacy Day is an ideal activity to highlight literacy during National Literacy and Numeracy Week 2008 (September 1-7).   If you'd like some ideas about bringing Indigenous Literacy Day into your classroom click here.

Many of you may have participated in our reading challenge in years past.  In 2006 over 14,000 Australians of all ages participated raising almost $80,000.  This year we've updated the booklists and simplified how the Readers' Quest works (see below).

How the Readers' Quest works

It's simple.

  1. Participants read ten books in total, choosing at least seven from our specially prepared Readers' Quest booklists.  Participants are able to choose up to three non-booklist books if they wish.
  2. When a participant finishes a book they record the title on their Reading Record Form (download:  form for school participants |  form for non-school participants).
  3. Participants who finish the Readers' Quest are entitled to a Readers' Quest certificate that you can download, print and present to participants ( colour | mono ).
How to get involved

Simply download the booklists and reading record forms you need from this page.

If you register your school with the Indigenous Literacy Project (ILP) we will send you an ILD pack with posters and brochures.

Registered schools that participate in Readers' Quest (or takes on any of the fundraising ideas for ILD)  will be entered into the draw to win a visit from author and ILP Ambassador Andy Griffiths.

Raising money for Indigenous Literacy Day

We hope that schools will use the Readers' Quest to raise funds to address the current crisis in Indigenous literacy.  Our goal is to raise $250,000 in 2008.

Schools can help by asking children who participate in the Readers' Quest to make a donation to the project.  In the past we've asked for a $5 donation but you are free to vary this.  Alternatively you may wish to hold a fund raising project in conjunction with the Quest (e.g. a raffle or literary soiree).

The Readers' Quest Booklists

Our panel has prepared new booklists for 2008 with wonderful books for everyone from pre-readers to adults. You can browse each booklist by clicking the link below, or download the booklist as a PDF.

The age range on each booklist is simply our panel's recommendation.  Participants are free to choose books from any of our lists however we ask that they read books that at least match their reading age (it's a quest after all!).

How the Readers' Quest is different in 2008

Many schools participated in our reading challenge in past years.  In 2008 there are a few changes.

  1. You can run the Readers' Quest in your own timeframe.  You can decide your own start and finish dates. Younger readers may complete the Readers’ Quest in a few weeks, whereas older readers may take longer.  You can run Readers' Quest over a term or over the rest of 2008.
  2. There is no need to send any paper work to us!  In the past we asked you to post the completed reading record forms to ILP.  Now you just need to collect the reading forms at your school so that you know who has completed the Readers' Quest.
  3. We will not send you prepared certificates.   For participants who've completed the Readers' Quest you can download and print a Readers' Quest certificate ( colour | mono).  This means you don't have to wait until September for certificates to arrive.
